About Us

The “About Us” is my favorite page to visit on a web site. I enjoy reading about how a business was started and/or learning a little more about the people or the inspiration behind their product. In just a few sentences you can tell if the business is simply marketing a product or if they love what they are doing and are doing what they love.

Message Rocks is a dream-come-true business. We love every part of our work from picking up the “right” rock on the beach to reading the testimonials from people telling us how one of our Message Rocks has changed their lives. We care about people and hope it shows!

The story behind Message Rocks goes back several years ago. In fact, long before a gratitude rock was popularized through The Secret, a handful of beautiful ocean smoothed rocks had inspired us to engrave messages of hope, inspiration, encouragement and love on them for ourselves and others.

Message Rocks was born on an exceptionally beautiful Easter week-end. My husband and I had recently moved to Newfoundland and decided to enjoy the day and go exploring. About an hours drive from our home we discovered a beautiful half-moon shaped bay with a wide beach open to the Atlantic Ocean. We stopped and began to walk the beach keeping close to the edge of the waves. Our two Border Collies, Casey and Maggie, ran ahead of us barking at any wave that “dared” to roll too close to their feet.

As each wave curled into shore, you could see through its sea-green translucency to the ocean floor a foot or more beneath the water. Inside the wave action, were small rocks being rolled and tumbled by the turbulence. It was extraordinarily beautiful. As we strolled the beach, waves would wash in before us and then retreat, leaving glistening rocks in their wake. We began to pick up some of the rocks that lay on the surface, then between crashing waves, we would dig through the wet sand, hunting for more buried rock treasures.

The texture on many of the rocks was like glass as you rubbed it between your thumb and fingers. They embodied the beauty of the natural world but when you held the rock, when you touched it, when you looked at it, — you felt peace. The rocks seemed delightfully magical.

One of us said, “In the busyness, stress and negativity of the world wouldn’t people love to hold something made through the beauty of nature; something that would remind them to be calm, to be at peace, to rest and refresh themselves. And wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could engrave a message on each rock that would help change someone’s life forever?” Message Rocks was born that day.

We learned how to sandblast rock and began engraving motivational and inspirational messages, scriptures, goals, and positive affirmations on the rocks we collected. We began to carry our own personal rocks with us at all times. They were a constant encouraging companion and a faithful reminder of things we were trying to accomplish in our lives. Other people who bought motivational message rocks from us did the same AND we all noticed one thing alike — our lives were changing for the better! We were all experiencing more of the good things we wanted like — health, wealth and happiness!

About the Rocks
When you look at your Message Rock, we hope you will realize how unique it is. These are not tumbled rocks purchased by the ton from China or mass produced elsewhere in a factory in Asia.

Each rock we send out has been hand picked; selected for its shape, size and smoothness. We have picked rocks on beautiful warm sunny days in late spring and early summer with background music provided by the “blow” or “pec slaps” of 20 or 30 Humpback whales, (many with their calves) feeding just off the beach in this deep water harbor.

We’ve stood in awe as hundreds of sea birds plummeted like arrows from the sky into the water after vast schools of fish. We’ve picked rocks, in late fall and early winter, as we braved cold, North Atlantic winds that cover the beach with white frothy foam balls, just to find a few more perfect rocks. Sipping hot chocolate, while wrapped in blankets in the back of the van, is the perfect reward for a cold days work.

Laughter is always a part of a day like that, as we question our sanity! Most of the time we come to the conclusion we are still sane! But whatever the weather, the joy of finding the right rock and bringing it home never diminishes because we know our labors of love become a Pocket Motivator rock or a Forever Keepsake.
